Please read what "Josh" had to say. I've been frustrated with this problem and I simply removed anything recent from that folder (User Data didn't exist) and all seems to be well.

Back to normal. Like others, I prefer not to use IE, but I use a lot of cashback sites and I know I won't have previous cookies in IE (because I don't use it!)

Thank you for putting delivering relevant content! My daughter trashed the hinge her flipscreen laptop and lost the ability to turn it on (power switch in the screen). Finals coming up, papers, 4000 pictures (shes takes photography classes) all inaccessible. Unfortunately, even hooking up to the drive didn't yield any access.
I followed your steps and successfully imaged her Vista instance with WinImage on a i7 64-bit Windows 7 machine. Here are a few notable things when dealing with a Vista image over an XP image...

1. I couldn't get the image to start up in safe mode or anything, it kept hanging. However, putting a VISTA CD into the physical drive never got looked at. Hardrive boots first. I actually hit DEL during the VM bootup was able to reset the BIOS in the image to boot from CDROM first. It saved, and I then went through the recovery procedure.

2. You start out in the VISTA install program as "Installing Vista". Once you are past that screen, it has an option at the bottom to "Repair". No recovery console like XP. VIsta kept trying to repair my instance.. It churned a fair amount of time. FIrst time it said it had fixed it. I rebooted and still no luck. The second time I asked it to repair, it admitted defeat and offered to sent a trouble report to Microsoft. At this point it gave me options to get to a command prompt.

3. I attempted the expand operation with no luck. The VISTA directory structure is different from XP. I searched everywhere and didn't even find any .CABs. At this point I decided to try the DLL overwrite with the existing DLLs in the windows system32 directory. I renamed hal.dll to hal.dll.old and copied halacpi.dll to hal.dll. Rebooted and it was up and running :-D

I am now transferring 13G of data to her new laptop.. She will get a double Christmas present considering she thought she had lost everything.

Thank you.
